5 Countries that Import the Most Edible Oil from India

India has ranked as the fourth largest edible oil-producing country in the world and the second-largest producer of palm oil after Indonesia with more than 22% of the total production share globally. The demand for edible oils in the domestic market is increasing day by day due to the health and nutritional benefits of these products, which are used in various food items like snacks, bakery products, rice, noodles, etc. India has also emerged as one of the major exporters of edible oils mainly palm oil and soybean oil accounting for 20% of the global exports from 2015-to 16 to other countries across the globe.

    1) Singapore

The edible oil price in Singapore is primarily influenced by these three factors: international commodity prices, local production costs, and existing economic factors. All of these are reasonably stable when compared to other countries, especially given the country’s solid economy. While, at times slow growth can impact oil production and therefore overall supply within Singapore, any negative effect is usually short-lived; economies thrive as soon as global markets stabilize again. As such, in addition to buying a lot of edible oils from India (the world’s largest exporter), consumers also have little to worry about when it comes to the overall demand for edible oils here in Singapore.

    2) Hong Kong

Located in eastern China on a series of islands near Vietnam, Hong Kong is one of Asia’s largest trading hubs and a hotspot for international business. With easy access to mainland China, Hong Kong relies heavily on imports for nearly all consumer goods, including edible oil. In fact, about two-thirds of Hong Kong’s edible oil comes from abroad—and over half of those imports come from India. Nearly 57% percent of edible oil imported into Hong Kong came from India in 2015, compared to only 4% percent that came directly from China. The next biggest exporter to Hong Kong was Indonesia with less than 18%.

    3) Vietnam

Edible oil imports to Vietnam have increased substantially in recent years. In 2019, Vietnam imported approximately $4 billion worth of edible oil; by 2020, that number had risen to nearly $6 billion. The reason for such dramatic growth is simple: By importing cheaper products from other countries, Vietnam can help keep food prices down while earning substantial foreign exchange. These days, 90% of all edible oil consumed in Vietnam is brought into the country via overseas shipments (compared with just 50% in 2018). The United States remains a top exporter of edible oils to Vietnam.

    4) the United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates has a population of 9.2 million people, making it one of the most densely populated areas in Asia. One major benefit to its population density is that technological advances have reduced shipping costs, making it cheaper for countries like UAE to import products from distant locations. The largest product group imported into UAE is edible oils, which make up about 7% of total imports. India exports about 35% of all edible oil worldwide and tends to enjoy a positive trade balance with the UAE. Imports into the UAE have grown steadily since 2000 and show no signs of slowing down as it stands poised to become one of China’s largest sources of edible oil in the Asia-Pacific region.

    5) South Korea

South Korea is one of India’s largest markets for edible oil imports. Since 2011, South Korea has consistently imported a quarter of all edible oil it buys from India. In 2015, South Korea bought $121 million worth of edible oil which accounted for 26% of total exports to South Korea. Additionally, in 2015, 18% of all Indian exports to South Korea were made up of edible oils. Overall, imports are much higher than exports but consistent purchases over time suggest a strong relationship between both countries regarding their imports and exports.
